Matthew J. Farrell, MD, MFA, is a chief resident in radiation oncology at UCLA. He studied film at Stanford and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Oregon before attending medical school at Oregon Health & Science University. His academic interests include health-related quality of life, JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion), narrative medicine, and health humanities. He has published essays and poems in JAMA, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Practical Radiation Oncology, and other journals, and he currently teaches a narrative medicine course to 4th-year medical students at UCLA.
